VISUAL INFORMATION
may 2013: a sun odyssey
synestethic interpretation of solar activity
Time Lapse: 1 day in 7 seconds Time: Universal Time
Image Data from the SOHO spacecraft (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) at geosynchronus orbit at L1 (about 15 million km from Earth)
The corona images in visible spectrum are from the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) C2 (shutter time: about 26 seconds) and C3 (shutter time: about 19 seconds)
The sun images are from the ultraviolet spectrum at 174 Å (17.4nm) wavelenght
spectral line of Fe IX (vaporized iron about one million degrees)
helioviewer.org
Image manipulation and animation: Eduardo Santana
The C3 image is colorized in fire fading to white and bringing the black space back
The ultraviolet image is intensified
moon is animated with data from celestia
added ecliptic plane and planet names
soundtrack composition: Yohnny de Miranda
explosions can not be heard in space because of vacuum. Sound fantasy and enhacing experience
the sound of the sun was processed by A. Kosovichev of the Stanford SOLAR Center in California
The sun frequency is around 3 mHz (wavelenght: about 5 minutes) taken with a heliosismograph in bord of SOHO
The sounds were obtained from 40-days of MDI disk-averaged data sped up by a factor of 42,000.
Ozone Hole over Antarctica
average total column ozone concentration over Antarctica for the week of September 7, 2014 taken from NOAA View. Areas colored red have dangerously low ozone concentrations, below 220 Dobson units, that are associated with the “hole” that forms over the region around September and October of each year.
